What is OUD?
Opioid Use Disorder (OUD), also known as opiate addiction or opioid dependence, is a problematic use of prescription or illicit opioids that results in significant impairment or distress. This includes the accidental misuse of prescription pain medications leading to negative behaviors or consequences. Patients suffering from OUD may run out of their prescriptions early due to taking more than prescribed. Many often turn to using illicit opioids until their prescription can be refilled, or they purchase prescription opioids from others. Doing so may put them in dangerous or risky situations, which is another sign of problematic use. Click the button below to find out more.

OUD is diagnosed as mild, moderate, or severe according to DSM-5 criteria. Click the button to see the criteria for diagnosing OUD.
Treatment of OUD includes comprehensive counseling, group therapy, and ongoing involvement in a recovery program in combination with Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT). The combination of both behavioral therapy and counseling while participating in MAT has proven most effective in allowing individuals suffering from OUD to lead productive, functioning lives without the use of illicit opioids, or the problematic use of prescription opioids.
